Keeping a Low Profile on the Internet

George Orwell’s 1984 imagined a world where your every moved was tracked, your privacy was non existent, and the government was privy to your closest secrets. That world has now arrived, in the form of the World Wide Web. But instead of government (which is answerable to the electorate) doing the tracking, it’s private business, which is unregulated and answerable only to their shareholders. We’ll take a look at some of the ways you’re tracked on the internet and how to reduce your exposure.

The meeting will be held at SkullSpace (Winnipeg hackerspace) on the 2nd Floor of 374 Donald St (north of Portage Avenue, two doors down from Yellow Dog Tavern,) starting at about 7:00 PM.

The Latest Fedora on an older computer

I plan to show Fedora 17 (the current Fedora release) on a legacy IBM NetVista computer.

Change of location: The meeting will be held at Ed Boudreaux’s house, 593 Carlaw Avenue.

Please send email to blowe if you are planning to attend , so we can get an idea of how many are planning to attend. If there are no replies by Wednesday at 5:00 PM the forum will be cancelled (no cancellation notice will be sent due to the extremely short time frame.)

June Grab Bag: I’m posting this late (what’s new?); if anyone shows up at the forum I’ll present a few things off-the-cuff, maybe try to show off some things on my Android phone (not too easy when I can’t send its output to the projector), and take questions. Then we’ll wrap for the summer.

Yes, we’re planning on having a Linux forum on Wednesday 28 March. The primary plan is partitioning an older laptop and installing a version of Linux on it, but if that doesn’t work out as planned we’ll take a look at updating Firefox on a 64-bit version of Linux and migrating the add-ons.

We’ll be having a Linux forum on Wednesday 25 January, where I’ll be presenting a freshly installed copy of  Fedora 16. Since I’m more partial to KDE than Gnome, we’ll be looking at the KDE version.

The forum is scheduled for 7:00 PM in the regular PC User Group space at Winnipeg Harvest.

I’ve installed Ubuntu 11.10 on a computer with a decent graphics card and spent the last few days playing around with the Unity desktop. We’ll examine how Unity thinks and works, showing what it does well and where it could use improvement.

The Linux forum is scheduled for Wednesday, October 26 at 7:00 in the regular PC User Group space at Winnipeg Harvest.

For the Linux forum in May, I demonstrated transferring Live CD or DVD content–specifically KNOPPIX 6–on to a bootable read/write medium such as USB flash drive or external USB hard disk. A copy of the presentation I used at that forum is here (LinreOffice presentation, 1.9 MB)

The Linux forum is normally held on the third Wednesday of the month. I’m still pretty busy with things related to the death of my brother back in January, so I’ve not had the time to prepare anything for the meeting scheduled for March 16. My apologies for the late notice.

Look for the forum to re-appear in April.

The Linux Forum will meet on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at Winnipeg Harvest. On topic for discussion will be writing a Linux Live CD to a USB thumb drive and making it bootable. We’ll look at doing that with an old stand-by, Knoppix, as well as Linux Mint.
